2026 Toyota RAV4 Compared With Five Hybrid Rivals: What Does Your Money Buy?

Toyota’s RAV4 is among the best-selling compact SUVs in the US, but how does it compare with its rivals, and what do buyers receive for their money? The RAV4 combines solid build quality, a family-oriented design, a well-equipped cabin, and a reputation for value and long-term durability. Now in its fifth generation, the model has been on sale since 1994.

The sixth generation, known internally as the XA60, arrives this year. It faces several capable competitors, so we’ve selected five of the most significant: the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-50, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Subaru Forester, each evaluated in hybrid form.

At the time of writing, the RAV4 starts at $31,900 for the LE. The SE costs $34,700, followed by the XLE Premium at $36,100 and the Woodland at $39,900. Pricing rises to $41,300 for the XSE and $43,300 for the Limited. Buyers can choose front- or all-wheel drive, along with either hybrid or plug-in hybrid power.

The XA60 is almost entirely new, even though it uses a platform similar to the XA50. Its overall dimensions remain broadly unchanged, helping it stay manageable in tight city spaces. Every version now uses hybrid power, with gas-only models dropped from the lineup. The front-wheel-drive hybrid combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with two electric motors to produce 226 horsepower, while all-wheel drive raises output to 236 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid develops 320 horsepower, can travel up to 50 miles on electric power alone, and reaches 60 mph in the low 5-second range.

The Woodland trim adds mild off-road capability through all-terrain tires, increased ground clearance, and rugged exterior details. At the other end of the lineup, the GR Sport targets driving enthusiasts with firmer GR-tuned suspension and recalibrated power steering for quicker responses. It does not, however, add horsepower.

The Honda CR-V Hybrid is the RAV4’s longest-established and most direct rival here. To keep the comparison even, we’re leaving out the gas-only CR-V. Hybrid pricing starts higher than the Toyota’s at $36,030, but the range tops out at $42,950 for the fully equipped Sport Touring.

Honda also offers a TrailSport trim that broadly echoes the 2026 RAV4 Woodland with all-terrain tires and exterior upgrades. However, the 2026 CR-V Hybrid produces only 204 horsepower and takes more than 7 seconds to reach 60 mph. The RAV4 PHEV should have a clear advantage in a traffic-light sprint.

The 2026 CR-V Hybrid has the more appealing cabin, including several distinctive retro-inspired touches. Its lower trims use a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, while upper versions receive a 10.2-inch display. Every 2026 RAV4 instead gets a 12.3-inch cluster. Toyota also offers 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch driver displays, larger than the CR-V Hybrid’s 9-inch screen. Honda does include a wireless phone charger as standard, a feature available only on higher RAV4 trims.

The CR-V Hybrid lands between the RAV4 variants for cargo room. It provides 36 cubic feet behind the rear seats, compared with 34 cubic feet for the 2026 RAV4 PHEV and 38 for the standard RAV4 Hybrid. Folding the seats expands the Honda to 72 cubic feet, versus 64 in the RAV4 PHEV and 70 in the regular hybrid. The CR-V also offers 5 additional cubic feet of passenger space.

Toyota equips the 2026 RAV4 with Safety Sense 4.0, adding features such as front cross-traffic assist and predictive curve speed control to its already extensive safety package. The CR-V counters with the newest Honda Sensing system, which comes close to the Toyota’s capabilities but does not quite match them.

With all-wheel drive standard, the 2026 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is an attractive option for buyers seeking additional traction and Mazda’s distinctive styling. Its pricing is competitive as well, beginning at $34,750 and reaching $40,450 for the Premium trim.

The Premium offers a particularly appealing cabin with red leather upholstery, contrasting stitching, and a Bose audio system. Lower trims use an unbranded eight-speaker setup, giving them an advantage over the less expensive 2026 RAV4 versions that come with six speakers. Every CX-50 Hybrid also includes a 10.3-inch infotainment screen and a wireless phone charger.

Its powertrain is very similar to the regular 2026 RAV4 Hybrid and produces 219 horsepower. Despite standard all-wheel drive, the CX-50 needs 7.6 seconds to reach 60 mph, slower than the RAV4 hybrid’s 7.2-second result.

The RAV4 has a clear advantage in cargo capacity. The 2026 CX-50 holds only 29 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 56 cubic feet with them folded, making it a poor fit for families that travel with a lot of gear. Mazda provides a respectable collection of safety systems, but it still falls short of the 2026 RAV4’s Safety Sense 4.0 package.

Hyundai’s Tucson is another established RAV4 rival and has built a loyal following. For 2026, the Tucson Hybrid range starts at $31,300 for the SE and extends to $48,900 for the Limited PHEV AWD.

Hyundai offers both conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, producing 231 and 268 horsepower, respectively. Unlike Toyota’s CVT, the Tucson uses a six-speed automatic transmission, which may appeal more to driving enthusiasts. Front- and all-wheel-drive configurations are available, as they are on the 2026 RAV4. However, the Tucson PHEV takes 7.1 seconds to reach 60 mph, compared with 5.2 seconds for the RAV4 PHEV, and its electric range is 32 miles versus Toyota’s 50 miles.

The 2026 Tucson Hybrid counters with a more attractive interior. Its mix of light and dark finishes, twin 12.3-inch gauge-cluster and infotainment displays on higher trims, and generous physical controls create a pleasant environment. Available equipment includes a Bose audio system and Hyundai Digital Key, which lets owners use a phone as a key fob and start the vehicle remotely.

Depending on trim, the Tucson Hybrid offers between 32 and 39 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Its passenger compartment is also roomier, while the lighter interior finishes create a more open feel. Safety equipment is less generous on lower trims, with features such as adaptive cruise control reserved for higher versions. Toyota, by contrast, makes adaptive cruise control standard across the 2026 RAV4 range through Safety Sense 4.0.

Subaru brings its familiar boxer-engine character and standard all-wheel drive to the comparison. The Forester costs $34,730 in base Premium form and rises to $41,545 for the Touring, making it a compelling choice for buyers who want a Japanese compact SUV outside the mainstream. Its 2.5-liter flat-four and electric motor produce 194 horsepower, but the Forester needs a leisurely 8.6 seconds to reach 60 mph.

The Forester’s cabin is more distinctive than the RAV4’s, particularly because of its spacious 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. It also includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Higher trims can add ventilated front seats and an 11-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system.

Passenger room is broadly comparable with the RAV4, but the Forester provides only 28 cubic feet of cargo capacity. That makes it less suitable for families carrying large amounts of luggage and equipment. The Forester Hybrid also lacks the RAV4 lineup’s dedicated off-road and performance-focused trims.

The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 brings hybrid power across the lineup, strong safety technology, useful cargo space, and choices ranging from front-wheel drive to plug-in all-wheel drive. Rivals such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-50, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Subaru Forester offer their own advantages in comfort, pricing, styling, or features, but the RAV4 stands out for performance, efficiency, practicality, and breadth of choice.
