BMW iX4 Arrives With Up To 603 HP And An Estimated 428-Mile Range

BMW is expanding its electric crossover range with a model that replaces the traditional upright profile with a more streamlined, sloping roof. The iX4 is the third vehicle in the Neue Klasse family, following the iX3 and i3. Every example receives M Sport styling as standard, but the key figures involve its driving range and charging capability.

BMW says the iX4 50 xDrive will go on sale in March 2027 with a base price of $66,200, excluding destination and handling. The automaker has not yet announced the amount of that required charge. Production will take place at BMW’s Debrecen facility in Hungary, and some planned trim levels will not be offered at launch.

The launch version uses two electric motors and all-wheel drive to deliver 463 hp (345 kW) and 475 lb-ft (644 Nm) of torque. BMW estimates a 0–60 mph (0–96 km/h) time of 4.7 seconds and a 130-mph (209-km/h) top speed. Its 112.2-kWh usable battery is projected to provide as much as 428 miles (689 km) of range. BMW generated that estimate through testing based on EPA procedures, meaning it is not yet an official EPA rating. Even if confirmed, the range and performance figures are relatively ordinary compared with the broader EV market today.

The iX4’s charging hardware is more competitive. Its 800-volt electrical system supports DC charging at up to 400 kW. In suitable conditions, BMW says the vehicle can recover as much as 184 miles (296 km) of range in 10 minutes, while a 10-to-80-percent charge takes 21 minutes. Bidirectional charging can also send energy from the battery to devices outside the vehicle.

The iX4 M60 xDrive is due later in 2027 with 603 hp (450 kW) and 645 lb-ft (875 Nm) of torque. BMW estimates that it will reach 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and achieve a 149-mph (240-km/h) top speed. Those figures improve on the 50 xDrive, although the acceleration remains slower than that of a three-year-old Kia.

The M60’s changes are not limited to its powertrain. It adds adaptive M suspension, an electronically controlled rear M Sport differential, and revised chassis tuning, along with standard 21-inch wheels. Buyers can also select yellow lighting influenced by BMW’s racing cars, giving the exterior a motorsport-inspired touch.

The iX4 also brings substantial standard technology, including a full-length panoramic glass roof and M Sport equipment. Its body has a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23, helping the sloping roofline contribute to efficiency. Inside, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive combines a display spanning the base of the windshield with a 17.9-inch center touchscreen. A 3D head-up display is optional, and the voice assistant uses Amazon Alexa+ technology.

The available Highway Assistant enables attentive hands-free driving at speeds of up to 85 mph (137 km/h). BMW’s new Heart of Joy controller oversees powertrain and chassis functions, and the company says it processes information 10 times faster than its previous systems. The system’s effect on the driving experience will need to be assessed from behind the wheel.

BMW’s iX4 50 xDrive launches in March 2027 with 463 hp, an estimated 428-mile EPA range, and 400-kW DC charging capability. A more powerful iX4 M60 xDrive follows later that year with 603 hp, quicker acceleration, and a higher top speed. Both versions feature Neue Klasse technology, including Panoramic iDrive, bidirectional charging, and available hands-free highway assistance.
