Peugeot E-T16 Concept Brings 816-HP Electric Power to a 205 T16-Inspired Hyperhatch

Peugeot has a long record of creating entertaining, occasionally outrageous hot hatches, but the latest one makes many of those cars seem restrained. The E-T16 Concept is an electric monster inspired by the legendary 205 T16 rally car. It can reach 186 mph (300 kmh) in just 16 seconds, uses three electric motors and looks as though it has escaped from a Group B fever dream. Peugeot also says some of its technology and design cues will eventually reach production.

The concept marks 40 years since Peugeot’s 205 T16 secured consecutive World Rally Championships in 1985 and 1986. One of the most recognisable cars from the Group B era, the T16 is clearly reflected in the E-T16’s design. Peugeot Sport describes the new concept as the beginning of a new breed of “Hyperhatch,” a category likely to appeal to performance-car enthusiasts.

The E-T16 has one electric motor driving the front wheels and two powering the rear axle. Combined, they deliver 815 hp (608 kW), making it the most powerful Peugeot ever built. That output enables a 0-62 mph (100 kmh) time of 2.5 seconds, a figure that even the original Group B rally cars would find difficult to match. Its engineering focus extends beyond straight-line acceleration.

The concept features torque vectoring on both axles, three driving modes and a fourth customizable setting. Its hardware includes 15-inch (380 mm) brake discs at all four corners, Michelin tires measuring 275 mm at the front and 315 mm at the rear, plus a vertically mounted hydraulic handbrake designed for tight hairpin turns such as those on the Col de Turini.

A redesigned battery cooling system draws heat from the sides of the cells instead of their bases, helping the car maintain a rally-like pace for longer. Peugeot says the system allows three consecutive laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife without reducing power output, underscoring the different endurance demands faced by electric and combustion-powered performance cars.

Group B Swagger

The E-T16’s appearance draws heavily from its famous predecessor. Its widened fenders, huge rear wing and aggressively sculpted bodywork are clear references to the 205 T16. Winchester Matte Grey paint, silver wheels and a red illuminated stripe circling the body provide further visual links to the original rally car.

The rear section lifts in the same manner as the original rally car, although the machinery behind it is now an electric powertrain rather than a gasoline engine. The body also incorporates a diffuser with adjustable aerodynamic blades, large front cooling intakes and a floating C-pillar that channels air toward the rear. While the E-T16 is not a production vehicle, its design suggests the potential for a road car that would be difficult to ignore.

Peugeot says the design previews the next-generation E-208, though the production model will take a less aggressive approach. The 2027 hatchback will feature the same horizontal interpretation of Peugeot’s three-claw lighting signature, while the cabin points toward future road-car interiors. A curved 21-inch panoramic display spans the dashboard, and Peugeot’s distinctive Hypersquare steering wheel takes center stage.

Steer-By-Wire

The Hypersquare is notable not just for its shape. It connects to the front wheels through steer-by-wire technology—or, more precisely, without a conventional mechanical connection. The production E-208 will use both the Hypersquare wheel and steer-by-wire system. A GTI version could potentially add the configurable display, although whether it would also receive the carbon-fiber bucket seats remains uncertain.

Peugeot customers have plenty to anticipate even if only a small portion of the E-T16’s technology and styling reaches production. Still, after showing what is possible, the brand would miss an opportunity if it did not find a way to build something resembling this electric hyperhatch.

Peugeot’s E-T16 concept combines three electric motors, up to 816 hp, a 2.5-second 0-62 mph time and an 85-kWh battery with styling inspired by the 205 T16 rally car. Its torque-vectoring system, track-focused cooling and steer-by-wire Hypersquare cabin preview technology and design elements intended for the 2027 E-208, although the concept itself is not yet a production model.
